Caller ID Spoofing

Caller ID Spoofing

Caller ID spoofing is the practice of causing the telephone network to display a number on the recipient’s caller ID display which is not that of the actual originating phone station.  The term is commonly used to describe situations in which the motivation is considered nefarious by the speaker although most frequently it is simply a phone prank.

Just as common e-mail spoofing can make it appear that a email message came from anywhere the sender chooses, caller ID spoofing can make a call appear to have come from any phone number the caller wishes. For example you could prank your friend with a call from 666-666-6666. Because people are prone to assume a call is coming from the number (and hence, the associated person, or persons), this can call the service’s value into question. A lot of people are so used to Caller ID and trust it without even thinking twice about the call being spoofed or someone using a caller ID faker service. One of the big players in selling the phone cards used in caller ID spoofing is SpoofCard, look for links to a free trial of their very good service.
